La Mortella Gardens in Ischia: nature, music, and wonder among the hills of Forio
The origins of a botanical dream
The name “La Mortella” comes from myrtus communis, the wild myrtle that once grew spontaneously in the area. In 1949, composer William Walton moved to the island with his Argentinian wife Susana, in search of a peaceful place to compose music.
Upon discovering an old lava stone quarry in Forio, the couple transformed the barren land into a spectacular garden, with the help of renowned landscape architect Russell Page. Over the decades, the project evolved into not only a rare botanical collection but also a cultural hub for young musicians and art lovers.
A multi-level garden: the Valley and the Hill
La Mortella Gardens are divided into two main areas:
The Valley
This lower part hosts an extraordinary collection of tropical and subtropical plants. Amid fountains, streams, and greenhouses, you’ll find:
giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica)
rare orchids
bamboo
tree ferns
a stunning Tropical Greenhouse with orchids and bromeliads
the Swan Fountain and the Temple of the Sun
A lush, humid environment—almost Amazonian in feel—rich in sensory enchantment.
The Hill
Climbing toward the upper level, the view opens over the bay of Forio, offering breathtaking panoramas. The vegetation here is more Mediterranean, with century-old olive trees, lavender, bougainvillea, and agaves. Not to be missed:
the Nymphaeum, where chamber concerts are held
the Thai Pavilion, built in oriental style
the Greek Theatre, an amphitheatre carved into the rock that hosts summer events blending art and nature
La Mortella is home to over 3,000 plant species from around the world.
Music among the flowers: the legacy of Sir William Walton
La Mortella is more than just a garden—it is a temple of music. Sir William Walton composed some of his most important works here in Ischia.
In his honor, the William Walton Foundation and La Mortella promote concerts, residencies for young musicians, and educational programs every year.
During the summer season, open-air concerts are held at sunset in the Greek Theatre, while exquisite chamber music is performed in the Recital Hall. A unique way to experience music immersed in nature.
