Great Travelers in Ischia: From Mendelssohn to Pasolini

Ischia is not just about sea, spas, and nature—it is also a land of art, literature, and deep inspiration. Over the centuries, the island has captivated travelers of all kinds: writers, poets, painters, musicians, and filmmakers, all drawn to its Mediterranean light and the spirituality of its landscapes. From Felix Mendelssohn to Pier Paolo Pasolini, including Luchino Visconti and Truman Capote, Ischia has inspired masterpieces and served as a creative haven.

It’s no coincidence that, starting in the 19th century, many European writers and musicians chose Ischia as a stop on their cultural Grand Tours or as a long-term retreat.

Mendelssohn in Ischia: The Sound of the Mediterranean

German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, a pioneer of musical Romanticism, visited Ischia in 1831 during his Italian journey. Already enchanted by Rome and Naples, he found in Ischia a perfect harmony of nature and serenity.

In his letters, Mendelssohn describes the enchanting landscapes, the kindness of the locals, and the quality of the light. Some scholars believe Ischia influenced the mood of his Italian Symphony, especially the second movement, full of melancholy and sweetness.

Truman Capote and His Retreat in Forio

In the 1950s, acclaimed American writer Truman Capote, author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, spent over a year in Forio, staying at the Albergo della Torre, run by the legendary Maria Senese.

Capote was seeking silence to write and often spoke of how Forio’s bohemian atmosphere—then a vibrant intellectual hub—was ideal for his creative rhythm. His writings are full of references to the islanders’ hospitality, local white wine, and the elegant simplicity of daily life.

In Forio, Capote also met artists and intellectuals linked to the Botteghe Oscure literary circles, living through a particularly fruitful chapter of his career.

Luchino Visconti and the Villa La Colombaia

Renowned filmmaker Luchino Visconti, director of The Leopard and Death in Venice, bought a villa in Zaro, on the island’s western side. He named it La Colombaia and made it his personal retreat.

Surrounded by greenery and facing the sea, La Colombaia became a place of gatherings, parties, and artistic reflection. Today it hosts a foundation that organizes cultural events, exhibitions, and conferences. Visconti once described Ischia as “a necessary place to rediscover myself.”

Pier Paolo Pasolini and the Archaic Soul of the Island

Pier Paolo Pasolini visited Ischia several times between the 1950s and ’60s. He was drawn not only by nature but by the island’s popular culture, which he saw as one of the last authentic expressions of the Italian soul.

Pasolini loved rural Ischia: sun-weathered faces, religious rituals, village festivals. In some of his notes and interviews, he called Ischia “a place where the poetry of poverty still survived.” Though he never shot a film on the island, it deeply inspired his reflections on southern Italy.

Cultural Itineraries and Literary Tourism

For those eager to experience these atmospheres, Ischia offers a variety of cultural activities:

  • Guided tours of La Colombaia, Visconti’s villa

  • Walks in Forio, following in Capote’s footsteps

  • Excursions to Sant’Angelo, source of inspiration for contemporary poets

  • Cultural events and literary festivals, including the Ischia Film Festival and the Ischia Journalism Award, which draw renowned international figures every year

Ischia has enchanted some of the greatest artists and intellectuals of the 20th century, offering them refuge, inspiration, and authenticity. Today, visitors can still breathe that same atmosphere—in the alleys of Forio, the silence of Sant’Angelo, and the gardens of La Colombaia.
